Bromont Fire Department (SSIB) — Training, deployment & SFOC (2018)

2018: 12 pilots trained and SFOC secured for SSIB aerial support. As of 2026, HighCloud continues to support the department with expertise, pilots and equipment when required.

Context

The Service de sécurité incendie de Bromont (SSIB) wanted to build an RPAS aerial support capability aligned with Canadian regulations and regulator expectations. Securing a Special Flight Operations Certificate (SFOC — COAS in French) was a key step to operate legally and consistently.

Constraints

Demanding regulatory framework, need for consistent skills across multiple pilots, operating documentation and risk controls suited to public‑safety missions. Scheduling constraints tied to operational seasons and team availability.

Approach

HighCloud delivered a targeted training pathway, then supported operational deployment for up to twelve certified pilots. SFOC support focused on structuring the application package, aligning with the operations manual and demonstrating risk controls appropriate to SSIB aerial support. As of 2026, this relationship continues: we still support the SSIB with expertise, pilots and equipment when missions require it.

Deliverables

  • Pilot training (pathway aligned with advanced‑operations requirements)
  • SFOC application support and preparation for Transport Canada expectations
  • Alignment with operating documentation (MANOPS / internal processes)
  • Deployment plan and knowledge transfer to SSIB teams

Results

  • 1Twelve pilots trained and deployed for the SSIB in 2018.
  • 2SFOC obtained to govern the department’s aerial support operations.
  • 3Stronger collective capability for missions under an explicit regulatory framework.
  • 4Reusable documentation and skills for subsequent operations.
  • 5As of 2026, HighCloud continues to support the SSIB with expertise, pilots and equipment when required.
